Best hard drive camcorder of choice, DV, Mini-DV?
I'm about to buy a video camera and want to balance a good thing with no overspend. It seems that those who burned to DVD are being replaced by those that record directly to a hard disk. However, these are more expensive. is there any great advantage of going with the hard disk version for the average user? also, if I go to the DVD route – is there any advantage to the Mini-DV and full size DVD? how you play the mini-DVD in a DVD drive? thank you.
ok what I say isn't intended only for you but all the people in the world who thinks that. miniDVD MINIDV NO. theres a reason why they call it THE LITTLE miniDVDs DVDS, FOR MINI theyre. its not because theyre DUMB AND forgot the "D" AT THE END OF "DVD" and decided I was MINIDV. is a totally different thing. okay, now this is so, I'm going to explain. MiniDVs are the tapes, while miniDVDs (with a "D") are thus miniature versions of dvds. in the camcorder world, when someone says miniDVD, is the same as dvd. so MiniDVD = DVD (for what they were talking about). Remember now. It will be on the test. there are three types of cameras, you have that right, but not the hard drive, DV, and miniDV. Hard Drive is one, yes, and dvds (remember this?) are otherwise, and DV is the last class. and in this case, also DV = MiniDV. DV isn't the same as miniDV, but in the consumer world (keyword: consumers) cameras, when someone says they mean DV miniDV. now there are three factors to a camera Consumer goods: quality, usability and price. Let's talk about quality. any camera you buy will compress the video (remember, still talking about consumer cameras). It will make the smallest video compression so its easier to edit, etc, but also reduce quality. Hard drive cams and DVD cams use MPEG-2 compression. DV digital camcorders use compression (hence the name). DV is less compressed than MPEG-2, thus offering a better quality. However, the file size will be approximately 4-5 times higher than DVD or hard drive cameras. in addition, the quality is when compared to a similar camera, a $ 200 miniDV camera will probably not offer a better quality of a $ 700 3ccd a DVD. The next factor is the ease of use. there can be two interpretations of this. DVDs can be watched immediately after firing, and HDD cameras do not even have to use recording media, so once again, these two can come to mind as the best options for ease of use. But if you want edit your videos (and "create great effects for Hollywood and become the next Spielberg budget", etc etc), you may want a DV camera. Engrave a tape, but still offer the highest quality and are the easiest to put in an editing program and edit. Quality is also important because when you make your video clips on DVD, which will have to compress, and further reduces quality. with a hard drive cam, you start with DVD quality, but reduced to less than DVD quality once its reality recompressed and burned. with DV cameras, begins with a better quality than the DVD so when recording to DVD with DVD just quality. The last factor is price. this is not really so important, because there are cameras in each format that are really cheap and really expensive, so it has a wide selection to choose from. However, it usually goes like this. MiniDVs are the cheapest and most expensive. you can probably get one for $ 200 (or maybe less), and face miniDV cameras (these are pro cameras, not consumers) go up to $ 8,000. for dvds, they will probably be purchased for about $ 300 more expensive and perhaps about $ 1500. and the cam hard drive, probably the cheapest you can buy for about $ 400-500, and the most expensive probably around $ 1,500, well. and one more thing before I shut up. there are new DVD recorder and cameras that record to hard disk HD via AVCHD. I can not get those. Or at least wait a bit before to reach them. nothing supports AVCHD. HDV is a good format, but arent a lot of options for recording, not to mention its hard to edit, and youll need a total computer / software revision. so IMO, probably better if you waited a while before HD. Hope this helps! (And there was no evidence, I was joking)

Review Summary
The Kodak Zi8 measuring 2.4 x 0.9 x 4.4 inches is a portable camcorder which easily fits into compact spaces like large pockets and bags. available in 3 colors (black
, Aqua Blue
, Raspberry Red
), the design of this camcorder is simple, and intended to be easy to use. It's powered by a lithium ion rechargeable battery instead of the AA NiMH rechargeables that ship with its predecessor, the Zi6. As a result, the Zi8 is slimmer and more portable, but you can no longer swap it with alkaline batteries should you run out of juice on the road.
The Zi8 is capable of shooting in 1080p and 720p resolution with 30fps. Both captures colorful, sharp and fluid video (for a HD pocket camcorder). The best performing mode however is the 720p/60 fps video setting, which has much more sharpness and fluidity compared to the 1080p/720p 30 fps modes.
Also, the Zi8 perform pretty well at low light condition (for a pocket camcorder):
One of the biggest problem with pocket camcorder has been the camera shake. Kodak try to combat this with the Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) feature. although nowhere nearly as effective as optical image stabilization (which no one offers in this size yet), it does help to reduce small hand jitters when shooting.
While internal microphone of the Zi8 isn't a great performer, it's worth mentioning that the Zi8 comes with an external mic jack which allows you to connect an external microphone to it to improve the audio quality. Below is a video from Engadget that demonstrate the audio quality difference between internal and external microphone.
Conclusion
With a combination of superior video quality, features and a reasonable price, we think the Kodak Zi8 is currently the best pocket camcorder on the market. The video quality is among the best we've seen at this price level, and you get some extra features like external mic jack, full HD video capability, and electronic image stabilization, which are normally not found on other pocket camcorders.
